About this Interview
Roula Matouk was born and grew up in Damascus, Syria. She studied architecture for three years at the University of Damascus during the country’s civil war that began in 2011. In 2017, Roula and her family fled the violence in Syria and relocated to the United States to join relatives living in Ventura, CA. After working for a few years to help her family reestablish itself in a new country, Roula moved to San Luis Obispo to study at Cuesta College before joining the architecture program at Cal Poly, where she sang in the Arab Music Ensemble. She completed her degree in 2025 and now works at an architecture firm in Ventura.
